Can You Get Married at the Mamma Mia Chapel on Skopelos?

Yes. Agios Ioannis in Kastri is a real, functioning chapel, and couples do celebrate there. It is one of the most magical places in Greece to get married, and also one of the most demanding.
Can we really get married there?
We can help arrange a ceremony there, through our trusted network of local partners. The chapel is not ours, and we don't control it. When it is available depends on the church calendar and on the season.
What kind of ceremony can we have, and who gives permission?
Most couples choose a symbolic or civil ceremony, or a photo session in wedding attire. An Orthodox ceremony is also possible. Depending on the type of ceremony, permission comes from the church, from the municipality, or from both, and we coordinate it with them together with our local partners. An Orthodox ceremony needs to be arranged with the church well in advance, with the paperwork that goes with it.
What is it like up there?
The chapel stands roughly 100 metres above the sea, reached by a staircase of more than a hundred steps. The interior you saw in the 2008 film was a studio set; the real chapel is tiny, and fits only a handful of people at a time (sources: Greeka, Skopelos Travel). Plan for comfortable shoes for the climb, a dress that can handle the wind, and realistic expectations for elderly guests.
How many guests can come?
Up to about 50 or 60 guests is comfortable. Beyond that it can still be done, but the logistics become more complicated. Many couples keep the moment at the chapel intimate, the two of them with a photographer and their closest people, and celebrate with everyone else afterwards.
What time of day can we have the ceremony?
There is no fixed rule. It can be early in the morning or at sunset, as long as the chapel is available and the time is arranged with the municipality and the church.
Where do the guests go afterwards?
The most practical formula is a ceremony, or a photo session, at the chapel, followed by the full celebration at the Castello or Vrachos, where everyone can be together comfortably.
Does it cost more?
It involves more planning and a higher cost than a ceremony at our own venues, because of the climb and the logistics. Every wedding is costed on its own, so we would rather talk it through with you on a video call.
